2016 India Day Parade

NYCO celebrated the 2016 India Day Parade with great pleasure.

As the saying goes “where resides one Gujarati, there will be Gujarat there forever”! Just like every year, there was a big Independence Day celebration organized by Panorama India in collaboration with the Indian consulate, including top leaders and celebrities that joined at Yonge and Dundas Square in the heart of downtown Toronto on Sunday, 7th August 2016

The event was attended by Panorama Chair Mrs Anu Shrivastav, honourable Mr Patrick Brown (calls himself half Gujju), MP Dipika Damrell, Bollywood actress Neetu Chandra, Consulate General of India, Mr Dinesh Bhatia, Nanda & Associate Lawyers and TV actor Shabbir Ahluwalia (Kumkum Bhagya fame). India’s 70th Independence Day attracted over 10,000 people to be a part of a great celebration.

This year’s parade consisted of 8 floats that represented different parts of India. The represented floats included Punjab, Kashmir, Kerala, Gujarat, Bihar, Maharastra, Panorama float, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and tribute to humanness. One particular float that stood out was the float of Gujarat. The Float was beautifully decorated with the traditional Gujarati village theme. One side displayed Chula (Indian Oven), Ghanti,(flour grinder), Supadu((grain separater), Kua (water well) and other side had Gujarat’s most famous folk dance Raas-Garba performance during the parade, making it the most happening float. There was an excellent display of yoga by Geeta Tailor and Dhruvi Tailor on the float as well. The Gujarat state float was awarded with a prize in the float decoration competition in the parade. The Gujarat state float was represented by Nataraj Youth Cultural Centre and it was led by Chintan Bhavsar. “We are proud to be Indian and Canadian, and we are here to show our culture and heritage,” said Chintan Bhavsar, the President of NYCO.”
